It looks like an ordinary throw, except the design is printed as outlines that you colour in yourself. The usual size is close to 150 x 125 cm, and the pens are often included.

There is no set order: one flower tonight, a corner of the pattern tomorrow. It is wide enough for two or three people to work on it at the same time.

White lines on black make every colour stand out, even the lighter ones. A busy pattern keeps you going for weeks, while a simple one is done in a few evenings.

What makes the difference is the washable ink. Washable pens use water-based ink that, per the manufacturer, washes out in the machine, so you can start again. Always follow the care label on the blanket.

If you want to keep a finished piece, permanent fabric pens do the opposite: what you colour stays. You can mix both on the same project, as long as you remember which parts will stay.

Two small tips before you start. Pull the fabric flat on the table and cap each pen as soon as you put it down. Start with lighter colours; darker ones are easier to add than to take away.

For adults it is a calm, screen-free way to unwind in the evening, much like a mindful colouring book. And once coloured, it is still a cosy throw for the sofa.
